What Are Game Handlers?

A handler is a small JavaScript configuration file (.js or .nc) that instructs Nucleus Co-Op on exactly how to launch, configure, and connect multiple instances of a specific game. Every supported game needs its own handler — there is no universal handler that works for all games.

Handlers are entirely community-created and maintained. They are distributed for free through the SplitScreen.Me Game setup library. Each handler's description lists which version of the game it was tested on, how many players are supported, which platforms work (Steam/Epic/etc), and any special requirements.

If a game you want is not on the list, you can request or create a handler through the GitHub repository. Handler scripting uses a JavaScript-like syntax with Nucleus-specific APIs for managing processes, symlinks, input hooks, and window management.

Games Without a Handler

If a game does not have a Nucleus handler, Nucleus Co-Op cannot be used with it — regardless of whether the game has LAN or online multiplayer. Handlers must be created manually for each game. Some highly requested games without stable handlers as of 2025 include: Baldur's Gate 3 (no stable handler), Helldivers 2, Sea of Thieves, and Fortnite.

For games without a Nucleus handler, alternatives include Universal Split Screen (which attempts a generic approach) or Steam Remote Play Together for online-only co-op.

Games FAQ

Does Nucleus Co-Op support all Steam games? +
No. Only games that have a community-created handler are supported. The game must also have LAN or online multiplayer for instances to connect. Single-player-only games cannot be split-screened with Nucleus.
What are the best Nucleus Co-Op games for 4 players? +
Top 4-player games include Halo MCC, Left 4 Dead 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Grounded, Borderlands 2, Risk of Rain 2, and Terraria. These all have stable handlers with good 4-player support.
Does Nucleus Co-Op work with modded games? +
It depends on the handler. Some handlers like the Elden Ring handler specifically require the Seamless Co-op mod. Others like Terraria work with tModLoader. Check each game's game setup notes for mod compatibility.
Why does my game have a handler but still not work? +
Handlers are tied to specific game versions. A Steam update may break a handler temporarily until the handler developer updates it. Check the handler hub page for the last-updated date and any known issues.
